Federal Release Route
The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates sentenced federal institutions and maintains the public locator for many current and former federal prisoners. A Sarasota arrest is not automatically federal. Most local bookings belong in the SCSO and Sarasota court systems. Use BOP only when a federal case, register number, agency handoff, or known federal sentence supports that route.
No BOP institution was found in Sarasota County in the official directory reviewed for this project. Federal defendants may be held under U.S. Marshals authority in contract facilities outside the county before sentencing or during transport. That arrangement can leave no conventional BOP history at the moment a family member expects one. The federal court docket and counsel may then be more useful than a blank locator result.
Search BOP Release Records
The BOP Inmate Locator supports number and name searches. Use a BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number when available. A federal identifier sharply reduces name confusion. The name route accepts age, race, and sex refiners. Match all visible facts and never assume two people with the same name are one person.
- Choose the federal-number tab when a supported identifier is known.
- Otherwise enter the full name and use the available refiners.
- Open or read the exact result and confirm the register number.
- Record the displayed release date and location or status wording.
- Check the federal docket for the sentence and supervised-release terms.
- Use BOP FOIA when a fuller agency record is required.
A past release date with no facility can indicate that the person left BOP custody. A future date is a projection and may change. The locator updates daily, but recent transfers and calculation changes can still require a new check.
Read BOP Release Results
The BOP locator records explanation describes historical coverage and the meaning of older release entries.

The official explanation makes the scope clear: the locator concerns federal BOP custody, not every form of federal or local control.
| Result | Useful meaning | Required follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Named facility | BOP reports a current location | Confirm current date and transfer status |
| Released with date | Recorded departure from BOP custody | Check supervision and other custody |
| Not in BOP custody | BOP does not currently hold the person | Check USMS, court, state, county, or ICE |
| Future release date | Projected federal date | Recheck after calculations and actual event |
| No result | No match under entered data | Try precise identifiers and the correct agency |
BOP Release Date Limits
The public locator generally covers federal inmates released after 1982. Older files may require the National Archives. Future release dates can move because of sentence calculations, court action, and First Step Act credit work. Do not call a future date a completed departure. After it passes, confirm that the locator reports a historical release and check the docket for later action.
“Released” may still lead to federal supervised release. Supervised release is a court-imposed term served outside prison under the U.S. Probation system. It is not BOP incarceration. Traditional federal parole can apply in limited historical or special cases, but the docket and official record control the label. A transfer to another sovereign can also end BOP custody without placing the person in the community.
Sarasota Federal Case Trail
A federal case docket explains sentence length, detention and release orders, judgment, and supervised-release terms. PACER is the federal courts’ document system. Counsel can address a pending pretrial case and access limits. The U.S. Marshals Service manages many federal pretrial and transport prisoners, but it does not provide a broad public historical released-person locator like BOP.
Use the USMS prisoner information page to understand that custody role. For a record request, use the relevant agency’s FOIA process. A blank BOP search can mean the person was under USMS authority, has not entered BOP, used a different identity form, predates common locator coverage, or was never in federal custody.
The Sarasota County released inmate search remains the first route for an ordinary county booking. If SCSO records show a federal transfer, preserve the date and named receiving authority before moving to the federal sources.
BOP Records and Contact
The locator is the fastest public access route. For fuller records, use BOP’s FOIA page. Personal agency records often require identity verification or authorization. Give the full name, register number, date of birth, institution if known, date range, and the exact record requested. Ask for an existing release record, sentence computation record where releasable, movement history, or other specific document rather than a new analysis.

The sentencing court is the custodian for its judgment and release orders. BOP is the custodian for its prison and release data. USMS holds its transport and pretrial records. One office cannot certify the others’ facts. A careful federal release check may require all three.
Federal Release Status Terms
Federal terms should be kept narrow. A register number is the BOP identifier. A projected release date is a current estimate, not a completed event. Supervised release is court-ordered monitoring outside prison after custody. Transfer means another authority assumed control. A detainer signals another agency’s interest or hold and may affect where the person goes next.
- BOP release
- The recorded end of Bureau of Prisons custody.
- USMS custody
- Federal pretrial, transport, or other Marshals-controlled detention.
- Supervised release
- A federal court term served outside prison under stated conditions.
- Register number
- The key identifier used in the BOP system.
- FOIA record
- An agency document requested through the federal access process.
These labels answer different questions. A released result can coexist with a live federal court term. A no-result can coexist with USMS custody. Always name the system whose status is being reported.
Federal Transfer Verification
When Sarasota County reports a federal transfer, begin with the county release record. It may identify the date, authority, and destination to the extent public. Then check the federal court docket, BOP locator, and USMS route in that order as the case facts warrant. Florida VINE is not the BOP notification system, and an SCSO custody event should not be relabeled as federal prison release.
Immigration detention is also separate. An INS number may be accepted by BOP as a search identifier, but that does not turn the BOP locator into ICE’s current detainee system. If the actual handoff is to ICE, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator and DHS-VINE. If the handoff is to FDC, use Florida’s offender search.
A Sarasota federal case can pass through several custodians. A defendant may begin under U.S. Marshals authority, enter BOP after sentencing, move among federal institutions, leave prison, and then report under a federal supervised-release term. Each stage has a different record owner. Preserve register numbers, case numbers, dates, and exact status text so a transport event is not mistaken for release.
The BOP locator is strongest for its own custody history. The sentencing docket is strongest for the judgment and court-set supervision. USMS records address its prisoner movement and pretrial role. If the public sources disagree, request clarification from the office that created the disputed field instead of selecting the result that appears newest.
Records outside the locator coverage period may need archival research. Even within the covered period, identity variations, data corrections, and agency scope can affect results. A blank search should lead to a more precise identifier, the federal docket, and the proper agency records route. It should not become a claim that federal custody never occurred.
Note: Directory findings and custody contracts can change, so use the current locator and the named receiving agency on the release record.
